Phil Grenadier Quintet

International visit by trumpet great, Phil Grenadier (US), together with an all-star Nordic quintet!

Throughout a career that spans three decades, trumpeter Phil Grenadier has emerged as one of jazz’s most imaginative and innovative players. He has recorded two albums as a leader, ”Sweet Transients” and ”Playful Intentions”, won him copious international acclaim. The San Jose Mercury News has called him ”a trumpeter of rare fluency and depth.”

Growing up in a musical family in San Francisco, he and his brothers Larry and Steve were all introduced to trumpet in childhood by their father Albert, who handed his lifelong love of music down to his sons. A move to New York in 1988 helped to further broaden Grenadier’s musical horizons. There, he taught jazz trumpet at the Mannes College of Music, and worked extensively with noted saxophonist/composer Bob Belden, playing on two of Belden’s Blue Note albums and numerous live gigs. Another strong influence during Phil’s New York years was his duo with pianist Richie Beirach.

Phil has also played in bands with well-known musicians such as Chris Potter, Seamus Blake, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jeff Ballard, Bill Stewart and others. In addition to leading his own Boston-based trio, he has a long and close collaboration with saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, with whom he recorded two albums and toured Europe.

Joining Phil Grenadier at Twang this evening is saxophonist Jussi Kannaste (FIN), who is one of Finland’s most renowned saxophonists and head teacher at the Sibelius Academy’s jazz education.
Johnny Åman also hails from Finland, but has long since had his base in Malmö, from which he is constantly touring internationally with some of the biggest names in the Nordic countries, and the rest of the world. Behind the piano sits our own Mathias Landaeus, one of Sweden’s most creative and hardworking musicians.
