They broke with tradition, and were inspired by the secular music pouring out of the radio. The mix of testimony and raw soul proved both spiritually uplifting and a winning concept. Forty years and countless performances later, the original members of the Staples Jr. Singers are still active, performing almost every weekend in local churches around the American Bible Belt.

The debut album When Do We Get Paid (1975), which the family sold from their lawn, has long been a superlative in the world of record collectors.
