Kurt Rosenwinkel’s NEXT STEP

Guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel returns to Stockholm Jazz Festival with his unique brand of modern eclectic jazz.

Instantly recognizable for his fearless, genre-crossing take on jazz, American but Berlin-based guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel has been a creative voice in modern jazz for nearly three decades.
With Pat Metheny’s, John Scofield’s and Bill Frisell’s eclectic post-bop in his fingers, he builds his own sound from ever wider frameworks.
When Kurt Rosenwinkel returns to the Stockholm Jazz Festival, he does so with a reunion of the band that recorded the record The Next Step. The brilliant tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, former classmate of Rosenwinkel at Berklee College of Music, bassist Ben Street and drummer Jeff Ballard.
The album The Next Step, released on Verve Records in 2001, is considered a defining step in Rosenwinkel’s creative development and was voted the most important album of the decade by Jazz Times.
This is what pianist and Bad Plus Trio founder Ethan Iverson says:
”While every member of that quartet is great on their own, there is also something alchemical that happens when these four play Kurt’s gorgeous compositions together. As soon as the tour is booked, I’ll get my ticket!”
When the elegant pathfinder Rosenwinkel now has decided to reunite The Next Step band, it is a great honor to welcome them to the Stockholm Jazz Festival and Kulturhuset.
