GoGo Penguin

Piano jazz trio from Manchester that seamlessly combines rock, post-bop and minimalist influences with electronic elements. This concert will be an audiovisual show in collaboration with the cognitive design studio TENENTNET.

Celebrated cinematic break-beat trio GoGo Penguin present APOPHENIA, a feature-length live audio-visual experience created in collaboration with TENENTNET – a cognitive design studio in London. The seeds for Apophenia were planted when the band worked with creative director Jordan Copeland and his team on the videos for their recent album Everything Is Going to Be Ok and the band drew inspiration from their use of new techniques and technology. Together they have created Apophenia, an exhilarating journey into your own psychological hardware, exploring the subjective relationships between aural and visual perception. GoGo Penguin are noted for their captivating live performances and here their dynamic, emotionally expansive music feeds a ground-breaking visual experience, created by TENENTNET for the big screen using racks of futuristic technology, as the band’s live performance drives the audio-reactive visuals.

GoGo Penguin is a piano jazz trio from Manchester, England that seamlessly blends rock, post-bop and minimalist influences with electronic elements. The trio was formed in Manchester in 2012 by pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Rob Turner. The band’s sound contains as much post-bop jazz as classical Western music, Massive Attack as Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Debussy and Aphex Twin as Brian Eno. Or as The Guardian put it: ”powered by fluttering, junglist drums, slithering bass lines and an increasing bank of Eno-esque digital manipulations. Hypnotic stuff.”

After the trio’s second full-length was nominated for the Mercury Prize, the trio left Matthew Halsall’s Gondwana Records and signed on for Blue Note. The band’s Blue Note debut Man Made Object entered the top ten on the 2016 Jazz Albums chart.

Atmospheric, cinematic break-beat trio GoGo Penguin is now coming to Stockholm Jazz Festival and Slaktkyrkan with music from their latest album Everything Is Going to Be OK and with songs from the trio’s extensive nine-album catalog. With a new drummer, a new label in XXIM and a subtly updated and developed dance sound. Go! GoGo! It will be fine!
