Emmalisa Hallander meets Tilde Schweitzer Big Band
Youthful innovation meets classical grandeur!
Two of the most interesting new names in Swedish jazz – singer Emmalisa Hallander and trombonist and big band leader Tilde Schweitzer – finally meet for an exclusive concert at Scalateatern. Inspired by legendary collaborations such as Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald or Count Basie and Frank Sinatra, Schweitzer will dress up Hallander’s compositions in sparkling big band arrangements where youthful innovation meets classical grandeur.
Monica Zetterlund scholarship holder Emmalisa Hallander has been on a Tokyo tour in the past year, participated in Henriks Dorsin’s ’Svenska Revyn’ at Scalateatern and released an album. The vocalist and composer’s second album ’Out of Reach’ was released on Prophone in March and has been praised in magazines such as SVD, DI Weekend, Orkesterjournalen and Presto Music. The self-composed repertoire is characterized by a romantic, yearning tone that brings to mind magnificent vocal jazz from the middle of the 20th century. ”Hallander excels in ballads. The new album Out of reach is proof of the high standard of contemporary Swedish jazz.” – Dan Backman, SVD. ”As a lyricist, she has a humor and cleverness that brings to mind Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer.” – Jan Gradvall, DI Weekend. Emmalisa Hallander has received several scholarships, was named breakthrough of the year by LIRA Musikmagasin 2023 and has been recognized for her red-hot scat solos, delicate text interpretations and high-class compositions.
Trombonist Tilde Schweitzer is one of Sweden’s youngest and most prominent big band leaders and arrangers. She was named jazz musician of the year and shooting star 2024 by jazz radio, received the Faschings vänners scholarship this year and has written for some of Sweden’s leading orchestras such as the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bohuslän Big Band and Wermlands Opera Orchestra and has toured with artists such as Benjamin Ingrosso and David Ritschard. Tilde Schweitzer Big Band has been put on the map with two sold-out successful evenings at Fasching in Stockholm. In the spring of 2024, they released their debut album ”Vintage Magazine!” which was named Big Band Album of the Year by LIRA Musikmagasin and nominated for Album of the Year by Dalecarlia Music Awards. Also participating on the album are Nils Landgren, Emmalisa Hallander and Leo Lindberg. The big band, consisting of the new, hungry generation of jazz musicians, interprets the popular music of the last century through Tilde’s newly invented format and arrangements where old meets new.
