Svenska Folkjazzkvartetten
Bridal marches and free jazz.
Swedish violin songs from Dalarna get new guises in the hands of the Swedish Folk Jazz Quartet. With four highly personal musical voices and strong communication, the connection between jazz and folk music is made visible in a way that has never been seen before. The Swedish Folk Jazz Quartet leaves no one unmoved.
Jonas Liljeberg and Isak Hedtjärn met when they were studying jazz in their teens. They quickly discovered that they shared a great curiosity and respect for Swedish traditional fiddle music. Since then, together they have studied archival recordings of older fiddlers, met with living tradition bearers, and explored ways to transfer the intricate details of violin tunes to clarinet and saxophone.
In the raw energy, the melancholy in the tonality, the variation and improvisation in vocal play and phrasing and not least in the turn, they found a strong red thread connected to jazz. Together with the drummer Anton Jonsson and the double bassist Vilhelm Bromander a symbiosis is created between many expressions.
Melancholy bridal marches become clear modal jazz, polskas become languishing romantic ballads, waltzes become expressive free jazz, and the groove of polska and jazz become one.
