Thomas Backman

Intimate after work concert in Lilla studion at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern.

“Crime jazz,” “jazz for a new generation,” and “slow-burn yearning widescreen chamber pop.” These are examples of quotes from the international press trying to describe woodwind player Thomas Backman’s multifaceted music. New attempts were made in connection with the release of Backman’s third album Nothing, which came out this March. At the time, Bebop Spoken Here wrote: “If you’ve been searching for the missing link between rap, sprechgesang, muscular European free jazz and Nancy Sinatra singing You Only Live Twice, congratulations, you’ve found it.”

Nothing is the follow-up to the successful When Light Is Put Away. The album was awarded Jazz of the Year at the 2022 Manifest Gala and also placed second in the critics’ poll for OJ’s Golden Record (Gyllene Skiva) that same year.
