Momi Maiga

An innovative kora player blending West African tradition with influences from jazz, pop and flamenco.

At the age of six, Momi Maiga received his first kora from his uncle, the legendary musician Solo Cissokho, known in Sweden for his collaboration with Ellika Frisell. Growing up in a large family where all his uncles played kora, Momi displayed remarkable technical skill and a desire to carve his own path early on.

While growing up in Ziguinchor in southern Senegal, he often accompanied his mother, singer Adama Cissokho, and developed an interest in the local sabar drumming tradition, frequently stepping in as a percussionist when his uncles performed with the band Jalikunda Cissokho. His first performance in Sweden was in 2018 at Klubb Mariama. Now residing in Barcelona for several years, he has formed his own quartet and recorded two acclaimed albums. The first album, Nio (2022), features an exploration of flamenco rhythms, pop influences, and tight string and vocal arrangements. His latest album, Kairo (2024), elevates his intricate compositions and arrangements to a new level, creating music that defies genre boundaries. Both albums have ranked highly on the World Music Charts, and in spring 2025, he will share the stage with the renowned Youssou N’Dour during the release of his new album. Besides being a gifted kora player, Momi is also an extraordinary singer and percussionist, adding an extra dimension and depth to his music that is rare for such a young artist.

The concert is organized in collaboration with Musikaliska Kvarteretet, Stallet – World Music, and Klubb Mariama. Klubb Mariama is conducted with the support of Stockholm City, Region Stockholm, and the Swedish Arts Council, in partnership with the Bilda study association.
