Lina Nyberg Quartet – plays the music of Kurt Weill

A tribute to the German composer Kurt Weill.

Lina Nyberg is one of Sweden’s foremost jazz vocalists and composers.
In 2024, she released her breathtaking 24th album, Lost in the Stars, together with a star-studded band featuring pianist Daniel Karlsson, bassist Mauritz Agnas, and drummer Peter Danemo.

A tribute to the German composer Kurt Weill.

Lina has received numerous accolades; she won her first Swedish Grammy (Grammis) back in 1995, was awarded the Golden Record (Gyllene skivan) in 2017, and received the prestigious Jan Johansson Award in 2021, to name a few. In 2006, she co-founded the organization IMPRA, which works for gender equality in the music industry, and in 2020 she became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Lina is currently an Associate Professor of Jazz Voice at the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen.

Lina is a prominent artist and, in many ways, a pioneer. She composes for and performs with big bands and orchestras as well as smaller ensembles. Her curiosity and uncompromising dedication to her artistic vision lead her to create ever more ambitious works. Lina’s vocal influences range from Ella Fitzgerald to Radka Toneff and Cathy Berberian, and her range and expressiveness are truly impressive.

On Lost in the Stars, Lina takes on the music of Kurt Weill, but the album also includes several original compositions. It has been praised in both Swedish and international press. Lina describes the project like this:
“Weill lived and created his music in a time that, in some sometimes frightening ways, resembles our own. I’m inspired by how he combines his background in art music with cabaret, jazz, and musical theatre, but also by his deeply humanistic, humorous, and loving approach to life and art in a changing world. It gives hope in the midst of everything. My own compositions on this album are all inspired by a specific Weill song.”
