Ingoma

Ingoma Quartet offers a unique musical experience where African traditions meet the free forms of jazz, influenced by legends such as Abdullah Ibrahim and John Coltrane, as well as the experimental spirit of early fusion

Ingoma Quartet is a Stockholm-based band rooted in African traditional music, drawing influences from artists like Abdullah Ibrahim, Cheikh Lô, John & Alice Coltrane, and early fusion pioneers such as Weather Report.

The band was founded by Mzwakhe Hlatshwayo, a pianist and multi-instrumentalist from Johannesburg, South Africa. He studied African classical music and jazz piano at the University of Cape Town and has since performed with numerous world-renowned South African musicians. Now residing in Sweden, he has spent the past 20 years pursuing his career as an international jazz artist and music educator.

Co-founder Jens Nilsson is a saxophonist from Öland, Sweden, currently based in Stockholm. He performs with big bands and various ensembles influenced by African and Latin American music.

Rolf Fredriksson, the group’s drummer, provides driving rhythms with a background in blues, jazz, and African traditions. He studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and has toured both nationally and internationally.

The group later welcomed award-winning and versatile bassist Rickard Malmsten, whose distinctive and melodic playing adds depth and richness to the ensemble’s sound.
