Emma-Jean Thackray

Emma-Jean Thackray, with her unique blend of jazz, electronics, and funk, performs at Nalen.

Emma-Jean Thackray is an exceptional musician and composer who challenges traditional boundaries between genres. Her music is an innovative blend of jazz, electronics, and funk, weaving complex rhythms and melodies with modern soundscapes.

During her live performances – often as energetic as they are experimental – audiences experience a unique musical journey, where improvisation meets electronic elements, with her passion for jazz at the core. In addition to her solo work, she has collaborated with prominent artists in both jazz and electronic music, including the legendary trombonist and composer Donny McCaslin and other well-known figures in the jazz scene.

Thackray’s critically acclaimed debut album Yellow (2021) is now followed by her second album Weirdo, set for release on April 25, 2025. The album explores and celebrates the isolation of being different, nurtured by the life-shaping weight of loss. Weirdo became Thackray’s way of processing trauma, specifically the death of her long-term partner, who suddenly and unexpectedly passed away from natural causes in January 2023. It is both intensely personal and powerfully universal.

“Weirdo started as an acceptance record, about being neurodivergent and understanding the complexities of my mental health. It became about grief. Do these two things come together into one world, one phrase? I think they do. This is a record about survival.” – Emma-Jean Thackray

During the Stockholm Jazz Festival at Nalen, Emma-Jean Thackray offers a genre-crossing evening filled with rhythmic journeys and musical surprises.
