Combo: Cherise + Theon Cross

A whole evening with the most firey from UK jazz.

Two concerts – one night.

On October 18, Fasching invites you to an evening where soul meets bass-driven jazz – with two standout voices from the UK scene, each offering their own unique sound. At 8 PM, Cherise sets the tone with her charismatic, intimate and silky-smooth ”Wonky Soul.” Then at 11 PM, Theon Cross takes over with a powerful solo performance that redefines the limits of both jazz and tuba.

You can choose to attend one concert – or get the combo ticket for 500 SEK and experience the full night. Each concert is also available separately for 300 SEK.

This is a night for open ears and moving bodies – a deep dive into two distinct yet connected musical worlds.

Cherise – 8 PM

Cherise is one of the most exciting soul voices to emerge from the UK. Her sound is silky and soulful, yet full of attitude, presence, and emotional clarity. She blends sensuality with confidence, vulnerability with power – earning her Jazz FM’s Vocalist of the Year and recognition from BBC Introducing as one of the most compelling new artists in the country.

After collaborations with Steam Down, Nubiyan Twist, Omar, and Gregory Porter, she released her debut album Calling (2023) – a raw and heartfelt exploration of love, family, and identity, while also paying tribute to her heritage as the granddaughter of the Windrush generation. Her 2024 follow-up Butter reveals a more experimental and relaxed side, where soul meets ’90s nostalgia, creative freedom, and a hint of DIY spirit. She describes it herself as ”Wonky Soul.”

At the festival, she performs at Fasching in an intimate format – close, captivating, and full of charisma.

Theon Cross – 11 PM

With explosive creativity, technical control, and a sound shaped by diasporic bass culture, Theon Cross has transformed the tuba from background role to the driving engine of the modern jazz band – like a sound system powered by breath.

From deep pedal tones and sub-bass to intricate multiphonics, he builds music from the ground up: rhythm first, then weight, then melody and atmosphere. Rooted as much in Afro-Caribbean tradition as in club music, grime, afrobeat, and West Indian soca, Theon moves fluidly between styles – always with the tuba at the center.

“The British jazz musician continues to make the tuba sexy with this spacey, dub-fuelled wig-out” – The Times

Since his breakthrough with FYAH and the visionary album Intra-I, he’s collaborated with The Smile, Little Simz, Makaya McCraven, and Joy Crookes, and played a key role in the influential group Sons of Kemet. At Fasching, he presents a vibrant, bass-heavy solo experience that expands the horizons of both jazz and tuba.
