MOBECK/ULANDER/ZETHSON
Mobeck, Ulander, and Zethson first met in Fire! Orchestra, where they contributed to the album Echoes (2023) and subsequently toured with the ensemble throughout Europe and the Nordic countries in 2024. Their new trio collaboration was launched in Trondheim in the spring of 2025 and grows out of the orchestra’s ethos of community and exchange — fostering interaction between musicians and artists through diverse musical methods, generations, and cultures. The trio collectively creates an improvised music rooted in, among other things, compositions by Ulander and his longtime collaborator Per-Henrik Wallin. Despite the trio members’ partly differing musical backgrounds, they are all characterized by an intuitive approach to shaping musical flow.
Heida K. J. Mobeck (b. 1987) is a tuba player and composer working within jazz, improvisation, experimental pop, and contemporary music. Her artistic practice explores how philosophy, relationships, social dynamics, visual tools, and text can enrich musical expression and contribute to creating holistic and politically engaged works. She recently released the solo album Utstrakt, and Vesen with the ensemble Tøyen Fil og Klafferi, and performs in a duo with guitarist Lars Ove Fossheim. Mobeck is also a regular member of one of Europe’s most vital large ensembles — the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra.
Lars-Göran Ulander (b. 1943) is a Swedish alto saxophonist and a pioneer of European free jazz. A central figure in the development of the Swedish free jazz scene, he has performed with artists such as Karin Krogh, Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen, and Mats Gustafsson.
Alex Zethson (b. 1988) is a pianist whose work spans post-bop, experimental pop and rock, electroacoustic drone, and gamelan-inspired chamber music. He performs with groups including Angles, Tropiques, Mariam the Believer, Vilhelm Bromander Unfolding Orchestra, Alberto Pinton Relentless, Juan Romero’s Manuella Orkester, and Dennis Egberth Dynasty.
