Alabaster Deplume
Spiritual jazz adventure where vulnerability is power
Poet, saxophonist and improviser. Alabaster DePlume creates music that unfolds in the moment. His compositions are built on circular melodies and glowing saxophone lines, often played by musicians who haven’t rehearsed. It’s a conscious method. One that makes space for vulnerability, spontaneity and true presence. In the studio, and on stage.
“A garrulous, heart-on-sleeve rabble-rouser, an anti-cynic keen to reduce the fourth wall to rubble.” – The Observer
Rejecting traditional forms, he lets expression lead. DePlume has become a key figure in London’s avant-jazz scene and has released acclaimed albums on the label International Anthem, including To Cy & Lee and GOLD. His latest record, A blade because a blade is whole, was described by Dagens Nyheter as “tender folk jazz that heals the soul.” His music shifts between comfort and protest, with words that encourage, confront and open up. As he puts it: “I want to talk about why I’m doing this, and how I’m doing this.”
At Stockholm Jazz Festival, he arrives with new material, an uncompromising mindset and his deeply human stage presence. As autumn sets in, expect a performance that feels like a ritual. Hard to define, and not meant to be.
