Afro Nordic Blue

A concert with three of Europe’s foremost musicians and improvisers with a starting point in traditional songs from Ethiopia, Armenia, Sweden and elsewhere. The concert is part of the programme connected to the exhibition "When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting" at Liljevalchs+.

Southnord presents the concert ”Afro Nordic Blue” in collaboration with Liljevalchs as part of the program for the exhibition ”When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting”, internationally acclaimed as one of the most significant exhibitions of our time.

Sofia Jernberg, Alexander Hawkins and Ole Morten Vågan are some of Europe’s most multifaceted and expressive musicians. Sofia Jernberg (SE) explores unconventional techniques and sounds from the human voice and collaborates frequently with visual artists, filmmakers, composers and musicians worldwide – everything from contemporary chamber opera to improvisational and jazz music. Alexander Hawkins (UK) is often described as unparalleled in modern creative music and is considered one of the most innovative and significant in the field. Ole Morten Vågan (NO) has been a central part of Scandinavian jazz and improvisational music over the past decade and has played with, among many others, the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Maria Kannegaard Trio and Joshua Redman Trio with Jorge Rossy and Joshua Redman.

Jernberg and Hawkins released the duo album Musho 2024 where traditional songs from Ethiopia, Armenia, Sweden and other places become a starting point for development and a personal world of sound. Vågan joins this concert on double bass, creating a trio with precision, depth and musical flexibility. David Topp writes in his liner notes to Musho : “Where is home, where is return for the scattered? Soft and crystalline, a music of edges, silence and tangential shoots, Musho dwells in these questions, invites the listener to consider displacement, migration, identity, responsibility, bloody history, the seepage of culture and community, but more than that, invites listening.”

The concert will be an inaugural live performance of Sofia Jernberg’s composition Afro Nordic Blue, a soundtrack commissioned by Southnord. The piece, created exclusively for Southnord’s platform, features Jernberg’s innovative vocal techniques including distortion and rhythmic singing. “Sofia has a phenomenal voice which, coupled with her talent as a composer, has created an instant classic that will be Southnord’s anthem going forward. It’s important for us to make use of the talent in the region, so commissioning a new piece of music from one of our best was a natural choice,” says Marcia Harvey Isaksson, founder of Southnord. The song is available exclusively on Southnord’s YouTube channel and features African jazz influences and evocative phrases, including the catchy choruses “It’s time!” and “We exist!”
